interests are in the elds of robotics and machine learning, including dextrous manipulation, teleoperation, autonomous mobile robots and adaptive robot behavior. LEARNING DEXTROUS MANIPULATION SKILLS 15 Heuristics derived form observations made on human hands were used to reduce the degrees of freedom of dextrous manipulation with robotic hands. This signiicantly simpliied the task and made autonomous learning feasible. Our system does not rely on simulation. Instead, all the experimentation is done by a physical robot. This is valuable in situations such as dextrous manipulation , where building a realistic and accurate simulator is extremely diicult. We used a modiied version of the evolution strategy to learn manipulation primitives. This learning algorithm successfully dealt with the noise in sensors and eeectors and allowed the primitives to be learned in a period of a few minutes. We showed that the learned primitives can be combined to form general manipulations and perform more complex tasks. Future work includes a quantitative comparison between our approach and more traditional non-learning approaches to dextrous manipulation. It also includes learning primitives that require repositioning the ngers on the surface of the object , and using a more sophisticated version of the evolution strategy to learn the primitive skills in even shorter periods of time. 6. Acknowledgements We would like to thank the anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments and suggestions. We would also like to thank Chris Brown, Dana Ballard, Roger Gans and Martin JJ agersand for several interesting discussions. Notes 1. Some modiications to the original binary-valued representation have been proposed and used somewhat successfully 10] 2. In the implementation we use a xed length window of past results to estimate this probability 3. This observation has been used in other systems (e. g. 19]) for computing the inverse kine-matics of the Utah/MIT hand. References 1. Michael Arbib, Thea Iberall, and Damian Lyons. Acquiring Visual-Motor Models for Precision Manipulation with Robot Hands

Dextrous high degree of freedom (DOF) robotic hands provide versatile motions for fine manipulation of potentially very different objects. However, fine manipulation of an object grasped by a multifinger hand is much more complex than if the object is rigidly attached to a robot arm. Creating an accurate model is difficult if not impossible. We instead propose a combination of two techniques: t...

Experiments on Dextrous Manipulation without Prior Object Models

In this paper we present a kinematic method for 6-degree-of-freedom manipulation of rigid objects using a dextrous robotic hand. Our method requires no prior models of the objects being manipulated, instead it obtains all the information needed directly from the hand's sensors. Its low computational cost makes real-time performance easy to achieve. We present experimental results showing the im...

Experiments on Dextrous Manipulation without Prior Object Models 1

In this paper we present a kinematic method for 6-degree-of-freedom manipulation of rigid objects using a dextrous robotic hand. Our method does not require prior models of the objects to be manipulated; all the information needed can be obtained directly from the hand's sensors. The method allows arbitrary (within the robot's physical limits) translations and rotations of the object, and its l...

Learning dextrous manipulation skills using the evolution strategy

This paper presents an approach based on the evolution strategy for autonomous learning of dextrous manipulation primitives with a dextrous robot hand. We use heuristics derived from observations made on human hands to reduce the degrees of freedom of the task and make learning possible. Our system does not rely on simulation; all the experimentation is performed the 16-degree-of-freedom Utah/M...

Experimental evaluation of uncalibrated visual servoing for precision manipulation

In this paper we present an experimental evaluation of adaptive and non-adaptive visual servoing in 3, 6 and 12 degrees of freedom (DOF), comparing it to traditional joint feedback control. While the purpose of experiments in most other work has been to show that the particular algorithm presented indeed also works in practice, we do not focus on the algorithm, but rather on properties importan...
